<p>Following a rough week 22, going 0-2-1, the Maple Leafs continued sliding down the standings, picking up just one win during their three-game slate last week.</p>
<h2>3rd star: Joseph Woll</h2>
<p><b>Week 23 stats: 1 GP &#8211; 1-0-0 &#8211; 2.81 GAA &#8211; .909 SV%</b></p>

<p>Although he only started one game last week, Joseph Woll had a solid outing in their only win last week, a <a href="https://theleafsnation.com/news/4-takeaways-toronto-maple-leafs-utah-marner-walks-off-shootout-woll-rescue-benoit-stellar">road victory</a> over the Utah Hockey Club to wrap up a three-game road trip.</p>
<p>The game started well for Woll and his teammates. Toronto jumped out to a 3-0 lead early in the second period following a dominant first period, outshooting Utah 13-4. However, things unravelled quickly. Sloppy turnovers missed coverages, and lousy line changes were among the short list of things that turned a 3-0 Maple Leafs lead into a 3-3 game within less than four minutes.</p>
<p>To blame Woll for all three goals wouldn&#8217;t be right, especially if you re-watch all three goals scored by Utah. Who knows if the game would&#8217;ve even gone to overtime and ultimately a shootout if Woll wasn&#8217;t in the net? The 26-year-old faced 29 shots between the second period and overtime, while his team generated just 13.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s been a rough season for Max Domi. Following a pretty successful year with the Maple Leafs last season, recording 47 points (nine goals and 38 assists), he has struggled for much of the entire season. Entering last week, Domi was on pace for 32 points over a 74-game season (missed eight games). That total would be the second-lowest point total of his career (he recorded 24 points in 54 games during the shortened 2020-21 season).</p>
<p>Fortunately, week 23 was a solid one for the 30-year-old. Domi picked up a primary power-play assist in their 4-3 shootout win over Utah after saucing the puck to Calle Jarnkrok for his first goal of the year. He followed that up with <a href="https://theleafsnation.com/news/toronto-maple-leafs-max-domi-just-played-best-game-season">arguably his best game</a> of the 2024-25 campaign against the Florida Panthers. He began the game with an enormous open-ice hit on Carter Verhaeghe. And if you&#8217;ve been watching Domi play, you&#8217;d know open-ice hits, let alone hitting, isn&#8217;t part of his game, so when he lined up one of the Panthers&#8217; best players for a gigantic hit, you knew he was engaged.</p>
<p>He answered for his hit, dropping the gloves with Nate Schmidt, and you guessed it, Domi fed him over and over and over and over again for a decisive win. With a massive hit and a fight already on Domi&#8217;s BINGO card, he ripped home his fifth goal of the season to get his team within a goal after trailing Florida 3-1. Unfortunately, Toronto came up short and dropped their second game of the season to their division rivals.</p>

<p>Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner and John Tavares combined for just three points in three games last week. William Nylander recorded three points himself, extending his current point streak to eight games (four goals and six assists). Nylander hasn&#8217;t been producing at the same rate as last season, but he&#8217;s still been a consistent offensive producer.</p>
<p>During week 23, the Calgary, Alberta native scored two more goals, his 36th and 37th of the season, keeping him in second place in the Rocket race. Although it&#8217;s unlikely he&#8217;ll catch and ultimately pass Leon Draisaitl, who is sitting on 49 at the time of writing this, it&#8217;s been an incredible season goal-scoring-wise for the 28-year-old, even if his points per game numbers are down from a year ago.</p>
<p>With three more points on the season, Nylander is up to 68 points in 66 games, putting him on pace to finish the season with 46 goals (would be a career-high) and 39 assists for 85 points in 82 games.</p>
